Pacers take Lance Stephenson with 40th pick in NBA Draft

It might not have been where he expected to be picked, but either way, Lance Stephenson is officially in the NBA.

The Cincinnati Bearcats stud freshman guard declared for the NBA Draft after one season with the hopes of being a first round draft pick. And while he fell short of that goal, he seems to have landed in a good position with the Indiana Pacers, which took him with the 40th overall selection.

“This is a night I’ve dreamed of since I was a little boy and I got my family here to support me,” said Stephenson. “I am just happy. This day came fast. There is a lot of relief. Stephenson should go in NBA first round

Former Cincinnati Bearcats forward Lance Stephenson remains hopeful he will be drafted in the first round.

Instead, Stephenson had a strange recruitment that saw him near ready to sign with several different schools. In the end, almost every interested school dropped out because of some of his off-the-court issues, leaving Cincinnati to scoop him up.

By Bud L. Ellis

New coach Butch Jones has a tough act to follow if he wants the Cincinnati Bearcats to replicate their success from last season.

A lopsided loss to Florida in the Sugar Bowl, followed by the departure of then-coach Brian Kelly to Notre Dame, put a bit of a damper on Cincy’s stellar season.

But 14 starters return for new coach Jones, and the Bearcats believe once again they’ll be in the mix for the conference crown and BCS bowl berth.

Replacing quarterback Tony Pike (2,520 yards passing) and receiver Mardy Gilyard (1,191 yards receiving) won’t be easy. But running back Isaiah Pead (806 yards rushing) is back, and a stable of talent at the skill positions should help the transition of new QB Zach Collaros. Eight starters are back on offense.
